I’ve used a Mac Ibook for four years, had to upgrade because the 37 G HD wasn’t enough, so for the price decided this was the way to go; at least try it for 15 days ala Walmart.

Negatives:

1. Touch pad unstable, inferior to Mac with two finger scroll; it even quit on me, had to be reprogrammed.

2. Battery indicator innacurate, best to ignore, figure it’s good for six hours give or take.

3. Runs quite warm, good leg warmer for winter.

4. Cover takes some effort to lift compared to Mac; doesn’t quite need a clam knife but takes some effort, needs a finger access/rest for better ergonomics.

5. Small keyboard not as easy to work with.

6. Slightly slower than what I’m used to but 2G can be inserted anytime for faster action, but good enough for now.

HAVING SAID ALL THE ABOVE, KEEP IN MIND FINDING A PERFECT COMPUTER IS SIMILAR TO FINDING A PERFECT SPOUSE… it ain’t out there, no way.

Now to the positives that in spite of negs make this the only way to go for almost anyone…

First, screen quality is a thing of beauty, in itself outweighing all negatives AND ADD TO THAT THE EXTREME PORTABILITY– easy to bring out and use mobile with wifi everywhere, or air card, which I have.

Other secondary positives include an extra USB port, but with camera card insert feature(FANTASTIC) USB doesn’t count for much.

Webcam might be interesting especially for the young (comb your hair first).

The audio is as good or maybe better than Mac.

Windows 7 starter OK so far for my needs.

Double battery life compared with Mac a real advantage for complimenting portability.

CONSIDERING THE MAC COST ME 1000 PLUS, I WOULD PAY 2000 FOR THIS WITH THE LUXURIOUS ADVANTAGES… at 298 it’s a give-away; Walmart offers a 50 dollar two year extension warranty or you can toss it after a year at this price, get a new one, saves trying to keep it clean and pristine.

Awesome Netbook – Perfect Portability – David H – NJ
I bought this netbook from Amazon and Recieved it superfast in 2 days. My Wife and I do a lot of travelling here and overseas. I am an airline employee so we travel stand-by. It is extremely necessary to be able to access the airline employee website to list for flights, checkin for flights and always have ready access the status of flights. We used to lug around a Dell 15″ Inspiron and it was like an additional piece of luggage. With the current security checkpoint delays, “LESS IS MORE”. This netbook is the perfect travel companion, weighs nothing and practically fits in her pocketbook. A neoprene sleeve and we are checkpoint ready.

I upgraded the RAM to 2GB using the Crucial Technology CT25664AC800 2GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory Module. USE THIS IF YOU ARE RUNNING WINDOWS 7. This will not work with Windows XP.

Extremely happy with this Acer. I also looked at the ASUS 1001P (Intel Atom 450) but decided against it because it was not WiFi N capable.

5 STARS All the way.

Great Netbook!! Lots of pros, a few cons – Ben Miller –
First off, let me tell you that I’m a technologist. I work in a very technical role and have also been in the security and networking consulting business for 10 years. When I needed a new hacktop, I was not looking seriously at this netbook (or any Netbook for that matter) due to the RAM limitations. However, after pulling the trigger, I’m very happy with this purchase with a few small, minor exceptions.

1. It comes installed with Windows 7 Starter edition. I promptly wiped that drive and installed both Windows 7 Ultimate and Ubuntu.
2. The 1GB of RAM that comes installed is not sufficient for my needs, so I upgraded to 2 – runs like a champ in both OS’s.

If you are just purchasing this to browse the web, check email, update our social networking accounts, etc… the 1GB and Win7 Starter should be fine.

The minor exceptions that I mentioned above are not cons, because they are easily changed by the end user. The one con that I can say has become a minor annoyance is the glossy case. Finger prints galore! If you suffer from slight (or significant) OCD, like I am you may have a problem with that. Again, not a huge deal and doesn’t impact my overall happiness of this purchase, but something that given the opportunity, I would smack the designers for.

Pleasantly surprised – Paul G. Marlin – Quincy, IL USA
Caveat: I’ve only had the Acer AO532h-2588 for a week, so I am not qualified to judge its long term reliability or durability.

Along with the usual web surfing, I use it for software development: Visual Foxpro and PHP/MySQL. For these non-demanding tasks, I can’t tell the difference in speed between it and my triple core desktop.

I received it sooner that was promised by Amazon’s free delivery option.

Setup went quickly: and I easily got rid of the trial McAfee and installed Avast virus scanner: got rid of the trial MS Office and downloaded Open Office: downloaded and installed PHP, MySQL, and Abyss, my favorite web server: copied the Visual Foxpro development system, programs, and data from a thumb drive: and was ready to go.

As far as Windows 7 starter is concerned, I’ve no complaints. I don’t see much difference between it and Vista, except it didn’t take me a year to get it to where I wanted it, and I prefer 7’s file navigation features. But then tend to be a minimalist!

The only drawback is that it’s going to take a while getting use to the smaller keyboard for heads up typing. But I put this in the category of “What do you want for nothing? Your money back?

I do a lot of bicycle touring; and in the past I drew the line at lugging a notebook wit me. I may change my mind with this little baby.

Excellent netbook, very light and portable, but limited – Troy Processor – Glasgow, Scotland
This is a great netbook – well designed and extremely light, and cheap. As a web browser or word processor its performance is excellent. It has no trouble with demanding Flash games, having multiple windows open or standard definition web video. Windows 7 is snappy even on 1GB. The web cam is low resolution but good for video conferencing. The battery life is very good, 6 or 7 hours.

It’s important to know that this is not a regular laptop computer though. Its processor is not powerful enough to do tasks like playing HD video, and the computer becomes sluggish when running complex programs like iTunes, often taking a second to register after you press a key or click. For video, it’s able to handle video at a vertical resolution of 360 lines but higher resolutions are jumpy, and 720 line videos are shown at very few frames a second. Not a single HD iTunes or HD YouTube video has played smoothly, even when buffered and with no other applications running.

This isn’t a problem – after all, this is supposed to be a very portable netbook, and it’s excellent at that, but it’s not a machine you’ll want to watch movies on. What it can do is really impressive for the size and cost, and I’d recommend it as long as you’re aware of its limitations.

Other issues to be aware of are a rubberized touchpad surface that prevents your finger from gliding across it smoothly, and that the version of Microsoft Works that it comes with is advertising-supported. You’ll need an external DVD drive to make backups of its system software and applications.
